KING RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
This owner desired a full building plan on a small lot in an historic neighborhood.
Solutions:
Krittenbrink renovated with a design that included an “urban” style to exterior space, altering interior room sizes to be in proportion with one another and with the lot. The firm was able to create the illusion of larger, open spaces.
ROSE RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
This three-story house dominated a corner lot and although the house had square feet, the configuration did not allow for the master suite and other design features the owners wanted.
Solutions:
Krittenbrink opened up the first floor and put in new, main stairs. The firm reorganized the second floor to create space for a master suite, while also improving the house’s outside footprint by installing a side yard that was suitable for the lot.
ALLEN RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
This home had a huge side yard that competed for attention with the main entrance to the house. As an historic home, there were limits to the existing room sizes and not enough plumbing.
Solutions:
Krittenbrink was able to use some of the land with the side yard to enlarge rooms, create a master suite and make the front entrance of the house appropriate for its location.
CLINTON RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
A 7,000-square-foot private home in central Norman, Oklahoma. Existing 1970’s contemporary ranch-style home. Dark, with little natural light. Owner wanted to showcase large modern art collection.
Solutions:
Added 2,000 square feet of space. Streamlined design, redefined shapes to magnify light and create a streamlined and neutral backdrop for owner’s contemporary art collection. Selective features included a stainless steel reveal base and natural materials such as soapstone, commercial application granite, limestone, slate and maple. Passive solar.
ENZ RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
A small house in a historic district was dated and poorly served the needs of the new owner. Living, kitchen, and bathroom spaces were all lacking in size and function.
Solutions:
A complete restoration of the existing house, maintaining the rustic quality of the existing structure transformed the spaces to restored confidence. The original kitchen was opened to the dining room, visually increasing its size, and a new master suite was added to the rear, providing the final functional component, while matching the style of the existing architecture.
POTTS RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
The 1955 ranch-style house was dated both in terms of flow and room layout. Materials like dark wood paneling and red brick, coupled with small windows, made the place dark and foreboding.
Solutions:
Walls were removed to open up space and capitalize on natural light. This new “transparency” was further enhanced by a light-handed use of traditional finish materials, celebrating newly inherited furniture pieces. New lighting was incorporated to accent certain pieces.
HOLBROOK RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
An inherited house poorly fit the needs of the new inhabitants, with spaces that were dark and dysfunctional, and provided no means to accommodate a growing family.
Solutions:
While some rooms were merely refurbished, most rooms were reconfigured to accommodate new usage. A guest bath, linen closet and utility room became the new master bath. Whereas a small kitchen, breakfast room, parking and illogically placed den, were converted to an open plan featuring kitchen, bar and den.
New lighting throughout gives the spaces needed “height” and brightened the new interior pallet.
FEDERMAN RESIDENCE
Norman, OK
Challenges:
Owner wanted to expand the existing 5,000-square-foot southern colonial-style home. Available land suitable for the addition of a master suite was limited and in public view. Also, the new suite could only be accessed through the living room.
Solutions:
Integrating the existing rear porch as a gallery, created new circulation to accommodate growth at both ends of the house. Treated the master suite as a “green house” that attached to the main house as a breezeway. Maintained the formality of the house without compromise.
